Day 3
Today’s Takeaway: Get to know your neighbors.
Today is SuperBowl Sunday and football is my sport! I’ve been a New York Giants fan all my life (Yes, I am embarrassed of how our season ended but I will never desert my team! Giants 4eva!)
When I was younger SuperBowl Sunday was always a big deal to my dad. Most years we would pile in the car and head to Long Island for my Uncle John’s Superbowl party. Superbowl bets and boxes, apps and countless cans of Budweiser (not for me, but my 7 uncles would put them back 😂) waiting for the new commercials, card games and pick-up football games. It’s some of the best memories of my childhood.
Now in my adulthood it’s up to me to carry on those traditions for my kids. However, my extended family no longer get together like that and even though I used to have those parties with my life-long friends, they all have families and plans of their own.
So in these new times who is comprising the guest list for these parties?
The answer: My kids friends parents and our neighbors.
Most of the time these relationships don’t start organically though. You have to purposefully seek out these type of connections.
You move into a new apt., house or neighborhood go knock on the doors of your neighbors to introduce yourself. Strike up a conversation in the elevator or while picking up the mail. While attending the millionth birthday party for kids, talk to people! You’re all there for the same reason, finding common ground is easy.
Bottom line, put yourself out there. Your next life long connection could live right next door!
Because I have practiced what I preach in every new environment I enter, today I’m attending a SuperBowl party with a bunch of my neighbors! People that because I took a chance and introduced myself, have become some of our closest friends. By doing this simple act, I’m able to give my kids the memories that they will cherish for the rest of their lives.
Remember, community doesn’t just happen, it’s built. Don’t let fear have you miss out on building yours. ❤️
Happy SuperBowl! Go Chiefs! 😉🏈🍻
