Day 13
Today’s Takeaway: Uncovering what truly inspires me.
I’m a HUGE cinephile!
That sounds dirty right? It’s not.
It’s the word that describes someone who loves EVERYTHING about movies. Basically, there are movie fans, there are film lovers, and then there are people like me. People who can very easily have a full conversation in just movie quotes - Cinephiles.
I don’t subscribe to one genre either. My top 5 fav movies include:
- Pulp Fiction
- Forgetting Sarah Marshall
- GoodFellas
- Forrest Gump
- The Departed
Well that’s what they are at this writing. 😁A true cinephile would never be able to truly commit to a top 10. Impossible task!
My love of cinema goes waaay back. My grandma was the OG cinephile in our family. Every time I would go visit she would have piles of VHS tapes to choose from. My cousins, sister & I had countless movie marathons. One after another & rarely the same one twice. It was a true education.
(Thanks Grandma Mary, ❤️ you!)
The shared love of movies was one of the first things my husband & I bonded over. We even had a movie themed wedding. Naturally, I planned the event. 😉 There were always two details that people talked about long after it was over:
The arrangement: Each table was named after one of our favorite movies. Every person at that table was specifically seated at the movie table they would identify with l. For instance, all my childhood friends & I loved the movie Wedding Crashers growing up. After that movie came out I don’t think anyone could say the word “motorboat” without someone quickly spitting out the famous line. 😂 They got that table. Smash hit!
The favors: At each seat was a mason jar filled with popcorn and Reese’s. (Our fav snacks) Each mason jar had a label with a quote from the movie the table was named after. Each person received a different quote.
All night people were going around asking people they’d never met, what movie & quote they got. By the end of the night everyone, in a 180 person event, was familiar with at least one person from another table. Mother of all icebreakers!
The reason I chose this story as my takeaway today is because on each of my “geek-outs” lately, movies were brought up in some way. (Specifically the Glass Onion got quite a few mentions. Fabulous movie!) It dawned on me that one of the reasons I love movies so much, is because it’s the epitome of detail oriented design work. 100s of people, united in a common purpose…captivate and awe their audience.
All these years, I never saw the HUGE influence my love of movies had on my career. My painstaking attention to detail, flair for the dramatic, the need to work in a twist or surprise - it’s all in service of achieving the ultimate reaction. To feel like everyone enjoyed the show.
It was a real revelation. I hope this might urge you to take a look into your past and analyze some of your undercover inspirations. You might be surprised with what you find…I was. 🎬
